Structural Engineering

Category: Science | Technology | Engineering
Suitable for:

Standard 5 - 7

Workshop length:

Half day

The Structural Engineering workshop is one of our STEM outreach workshops designed to introduce young girls to the exciting field of structural engineering. Using Structural Engineering kits, girls learn about the basic principles of mechanical physics and structural engineering and see how Structural Engineers design and build structures like bridges and skyscrapers in a safe and cost-effective manner.

Through the workshop, girls actively explore the forces that act on structural components like bridges and buildings, including tension, compression, shear, and bending. By learning to calculate these forces and identify load paths, they gain a deeper understanding of how Engineers ensure the stability and safety of these structures, while also minimizing costs.

We believe that fostering a supportive and engaging workshop environment is essential, but equipping girls with opportunities to practice at home is equally crucial. Therefore, after participating in at least six STEM sessions, girls earn their own Structural Engineering kits. This empowers them to continue practicing and experimenting, actively building upon the skills and knowledge they acquired during the workshop.

Our Structural Engineering workshop empowers girls by not only introducing them to exciting STEM fields, but also by fostering their confidence in learning and applying new skills. Through engaging hands-on activities and challenging problem-solving tasks with the Structural Engineering kit, girls develop critical thinking, collaboration, and practical skills in design and construction. As they overcome each challenge, they build a sense of ownership and pride in their work, ultimately boosting their self-confidence.
